The Elephant and Castle renewal will include the creation of a pedestrianised town centre, a market square, 5,000 new and replacement homes, up to 450,000 square feet of retail space, an integrated public transport hub, and new green spaces.
For our group project, we decided to gather information about whether the regeneration does benefit everyone in practice, as the developments have received a lot of negative press suggesting that they will force people to move out of the area and lose their businesses.
The best way was to interview locals in Elephant and Castle and get their view on the impact of the regeneration.
We spoke to Joy, owner of the ‘Joy Juice Bar’, who has confessed her optimistic approach towards the market changes
“Whatever happens, happens,” she said. “The way I see it if this market closes down they will be building a new smaller market, but when that time comes I’ll be owning my own shop.”
